Merry Mixmas 4 isn't a new mix; consider it a rebranding. I posted it under a different name a few years back and it had barely any plays. The previous Mixmas mixes had quite a few thousand plays over various platforms over the years. Me being me, I've deleted and reposted them so many times now, I've lost track of the true numbers. Anyway, I'm on a mission to repost all my mixes over time, so figured the best place for this was in with my Merry Mixmas series so I could keep them all together.

This one is less of a mix, more of a selection and is mostly Christmas music that going by what I hear played, are tracks that are generally lesser known, though not all in that bracket. There's shades of Jazz, Funk, Soul, Country, Blues and Reggae in there. So, if you want something festive, without the Wham!, Mariah, and all the other tunes that get rinsed year after year, this might be for you.

The cover is another where I've made use of AI... it's not perfect but it is good fun!

This post will share the first 3 Merry Mixmas mixes as they were put together in consecutive years back in 2008, 2009 and 2010. I've given the cover images a refresh because the previous ones were not the best and it's nice to freshen them up.... making use of A.I believe it or not!

The back story to these 3 mixes is that I used to love a mash-up, I still do love some of them to be honest. Some have stood the test of time really well, others less so, but it was all about a fun way to re imagine some well known music. At the forefront of that used to be a website called GYBO, or Get Your Bootleg On, and that was the site where I discovered a lot of the mash-up creators. Aside from that, if memory serves me right, there was a creator called DJ BC who put an annual compilation out at Christmas time called Santastic, and so I put these mixes together from these places, along with some other tracks that I scoured the internet for.

I'm not sure I'll get very far with the tracklists on these, but I'll do my best..... and if this isn't your cup of tea, I'll join you with a Bah! Humbug! (But I'm reposting all my mixes and these are topical).

This is a mix from around 2010. I've given the cover a refresh, I think this looks a lot better than the original version. Although the title has not sat very well with me, really since I originally posted it. I think the title came about due to the fact that around that time I was also playing around with a lot of tech house, electro and much more uptempo house in general, so the vibe on this felt more chilled. Clearly it's not, it's quite dancefloor friendly, but just a different kind of dancefloor.

I still think back to Kirsty Pemberton, who's gone on to do a lot in terms of playing out and invovlement with labels etc, leaving a comment on my original upload, along the lines of 'I sat down to listen up, but had to get up to dance'. I don't think I've ever come across someone with such a depth and breadth of music knowledge, so that was most definitely a highlight in terms of comments received.

So, sit down, stand up, jog, dance, whatever takes your fancy. The name's just a name.

This was an off-the-cuff mix, and it shows at times. A couple of mixes and tracks don't flow as well as I'd like, but there are some great tracks in here. Sometimes mixes go that way, but there's still enough here to enjoy, or to my ears there is.

The cover is actually just a photo of a lego character that an old neighbours eldest kid gave me. They knew records and dj-ing was my hobby and they picked it up for me when they saw it. Anyway, it's from around 2013 I think. Unfortunately there's a few tracks I can't find now when linking up the tracklist so you'll need to do some digging for those if you want them.

Another mix from around 2010, and another mix with no real back story. I think at the time I was still getting to grips with CDJ's, the blog was still a fairly new and exciting thing and I was trying to build some content. From the outside looking in it's probably looked / looks like a waste of time, but it's something that's helped me over the years even if it didn't go the direction I'd hoped at the time. 

I still like the fact that this is my own space, not beholden to the social media sites and I'm no longer worrying about chasing the algorithms, though I do still share the posts I'm putting up here, I think it's a force of habit. Anyway, I'm still here, talking into the void as ever, and listening to some of my own older mixes (with an occasional cringe) as I go but enjoying listening to some tunes I'd parked and forgotten about. 

As for traffic and other people finding their way here; if they do, then fine, if not then I'm okay with it being that way too. I think that's one of the things this space, and others that still operate off the big platforms, has over social media - so much is posted on Facebook, Twitter (I'm not changing), TikTok and the rest, that things posted there are lost forever almost as soon as they are posted and people are so used to simply flicking through now the stats are almost meaningless. This place moves in the direction I choose and at the pace that fits me.

Being asked to do a guest mix is an occasion that is few and far between for me, certainly these days (and I doubt it'll come my way again), but once upon a time, I was doing things like this on a semi-regular basis and it was great!

 

Johnny Burns was probably the main driving force behind the online radio station Box Frequency, he spent hours putting shows together, forming relationships with people, chasing folk up who'd committed to providing shows and probably a lot more besides.

 

When I was asked to put a mix forward I was so pleased, like genuinely over the moon. I don't think it's a stretch to say that I've never been a confident chap, in many aspects, but certainly with "DJ-ing". Before I got my first set of turntables I loved the world of dance music, the DJ culture, and I really wanted to find a way to be a part of that... the buzz of finding amazing new tunes and when I got my first set of decks I loved just playing around and trying to find good tunes to put together; but I never felt confident in it, and still don't. Putting myself out there is not a comfortable place, even posting my mixes online feels an uneasy thing to do. When Johnny got in touch with me it was such a confidence boost and I'll be forever grateful for it. On the nights where I had shows and mixes being aired, and when it was the turns of others, the chat box was a really great place for me personally. There was so much positivity and boy did I need that, and feel very thankful for it. I miss it, but I guess it was of it's time.

Anyway, there will be a few more Box Frequency related mixes posted. The latter ones on my part weren't my best, it was a time of upheaval with house moves and the weight of dealing with the care system started to take a toll on me, but I'll post them anyway. I plan on putting all my mixes up and will be trying to make sure I leave them on, once and for all. The good, the bad and the ugly mediocre. As I say, this was my first guest mix, it was from March 2013 for the now (sadly) defunct BoxFrequency.FM.

Today marks the third anniversary of my Mum's passing, so for that reason it seemed fitting to jump forward in the timeline of repopulating my blog with mixes I have put together.

This three part series of mixes were put together a few months after; the dust was settling and I was feeling quite lost, unsure what to focus on, given the fact my Mum and her care had been the centre of that focus for such a long time. At the same time, although she never complained, I also had a sense of relief that she was not living with the illness that deprived her of so much, and perhaps selfishly, that I didn't carry that weight of responsibility. I was looking for my path forward. I still feel surrounded by fog, I'm still looking for the path, it's a work in progress.

I tried to put together these mixes with a sense of what I was feeling, and when I listen back to them, I feel that I captured it reasonably well. To me there's a sense of loss, melancholy, connection to nature and also elements of light and hope within the music and mixes. As my friend Matthew put it in a comment - "There is a sense of calm reverie. There is hope".
