This is the most recent mix I have done, back in January 2023. I haven't even switched my equipment on since then and truth be told, I'm not sure if I will or if that's me done with it.

The backstory to this mix and title ties into the 'Year of Music' series of mixes / selections I recorded and posted each week during 2022. I've left it entirely as it was when I first posted it. The previous post (Not The End) was meant to be the final installment to the series, but after I posted it I kind of felt it didn't sit right that I didn't round off with a mix. Ironic that I then recorded this one, uploaded it before listening, then realised there are a couple of glitches in the recording. These glitches happen because I'm using an old Mac, 12 years old to be exact, and as amazing as it has been to get me through all these years (it's had a lot of use, daily) it struggled in recent years with running some apps and the glitches come (I think) when the memory get's a little bogged down. I thought about spending time fixing the glitches, but for all the folk that listen these days, there's very little point. Once upon a time it would have been in the recycle bin and redone.

I digress. The backstory, aside from it being the final mix from my year of raising funds for Sue Ryder, I also want to end that effort with a message of thanks to the handful of people that contributed and helped me raise just over £400 for Sue Ryder. My very first mix of that year opened with tracks by artists whose first letter of their name spelled out S.U.E R.Y.D.E.R, and this one carried a message to those who helped me see this project through, and much of it carries a message and meaning, as many of my mixes do, that conveys where I am and how I feel at any given moment. Something that never really seemed to register over the years. Anyway....

If you aren't up to speed with what that 'Year of Music' thing was about, there's a short post about it [HERE].

Is this my final post, final mix, final blethers into the ether? Who knows?!? Apart from the fact we seem to be living in the TikTok era where everything has to clipped into a one minute video with a minute long clip of music, life has been a struggle in recent times and I no longer feel like I'm a part of something with music, which hasn't really helped. That's contributed to less engagement, which often over the years has lifted my spirits and kept me going and feeling connected to people. Without that, what's the point? I guess we'll see what happens.

My

Sincerest

Thanks

Not The End (01)

28 October 2024

Number one in my 'Year of Music' series. This was my 52nd mix / selection of 2022 having posted one each week for the full year. It felt appropriate that I post an eclectic selection for what should have been the final post of the series. So, with that in mind, here is three hours of music from my record and cd shelves and from my digital library. Not much emphasis on mixing, but I did try and give it some sense of flow, though you can be the judge of that. It's kind of what I have always aimed for with my mixes and selections.

As for the title, well it's changed from '01' to 'Not The End'. The cover image is pretty much the same as I originally used. This new title alludes to the fact that I did actually post one more mix to round the series off and I'll get that up on the blog soon. Whether or not that one is 'the end' or not, I can't say for sure. It's been 22 months since I even plugged my equipment in. Life has been turbulent and really hard going this last few years and the pleasure I got from things I always loved and enjoyed has been missing. Maybe that's a sign to try again but the motivation has not been there. Aside from that, the things I post don't get much attention any more, the communities I was a part of for some years have disappeared and that was also a part of the enjoyment for me - sharing music with people and listening to music they shared too. So, for now I'll leave it at 'Not The End';

If you didn't catch previous posts and want to know what my 'Year of Music' was about, then I've posted a short explanation [HERE].

Facing Down The Storms (27)

4 July 2024

I have to be honest, I thought I'd be finished re-populating the blog by now, but here I am posting what was originally titled '27', and I still have some way to go. I've had a lot going on of late, so it's a symptom of the limits of time... I'll get there eventually.

I've given this one the new title of 'Facing Down The Storms', does it fit? I don't know, you can be the judge of that yourself. On a personal note, it feels like that's a permanent feature of life, so I guess that's where the title came from and why I've opted for it.

The cover photo is an image I took myself back in 2021, it's at Burghead beach on the Moray coastline and looking in the direction of Inverness. At the time, the sun was shining directly above us, and in the distance the sky was filled with menacing clouds, the rainfall was clearly visible and there were regular flashes of lightning. Literally facing down the storms.

If you want to know more about the 'Year of Music' series then you'll find a explanation of that [HERE].

To Rise & Fall (28)

28 June 2024

This mix was  #28 in the 'Year of Music' series, it's now got a new title and cover image. I went with the title 'To Rise & Fall' because there's an elemental / water theme unintentionally running through parts of the mix, but when I thought about it I like the simile of the ocean rising and falling through tidal movements and the similarities in many ways to life itself. Ups and downs, movement that happens (often) without much control.

If you want to know what the 'Year in Music' I mentioned was about, then you can find an little individual post on that [HERE].

Growth & Decay (30)

20 June 2024

This was originally number 30 in the 'Year of Music' series from back in 2022. I've given it the title 'Growth & Decay' and although the photo I used for the original cover is the same, it's had a bit of an edit to work with the title a little better.

I went with the title 'Growth & Decay' for a couple of reasons, firstly some of the music ties in beautifully with that, listen and judge for yourself. Secondly, the photo was a macro photo I took in my garden a few years ago, I forget what the flower is, but the original image is showing the flower at that point where it's bloomed, it's done what it needs to do and it's beginning to degrade and decay.

I might have said this about other mixes I've posted recently (I listen to them before I repost them), but this is one of my favourite mixes from that year, it's got a nice flow to it, and of course, I bought the music for my own listening enjoyment, so of course I'm going to feel something towards it, but it also is one of the most played mixes of mine from recent years, so it must have struck a chord with other people too, which is always nice to think.

Into The Ether (32)

16 June 2024

This one was number 32 in the 'Year of Music' series. It was posted a few day's after what would have been my Mum's Birthday, so the tracklist and feel of the mix reflects how things were feeling that week. The David Boulter track in particular, not just for some of the words within, but the track title too; I planted a Cherry Blossom tree for her where her ashes were scattered. Ironically, June 16th, the day I'm reposting is also a poignant day, for different reasons, but it's funny how these things are thrown up in life.

The new title I think reflects quite well the thoughts and feelings behind the selection. The definition of ether being "the clear sky; the upper regions of air beyond the clouds". The image is the same image used during the 'Year of Music' and is a photo taken from the banks of the Lac du Bourget at Aix les Bains in France. It's a beautiful part of the world where I had to have an emergency overnight stop because my bike was playing up during a tour in Europe in 2019. I hope to make it back one day, I was on my way to Grenoble and to take in the Combe Laval balcony roads, which I missed out on with bike troubles changing my plan. I love the light in the photo, but also the fact it's slightly out of focus, it all kind of ties in to me.

Behind Closed Doors (39)

10 June 2024

Number 39 in the 'Year of Music' series is now titled 'Behind Closed Doors'. As well as a fresh name, the cover is completely new, it's an edited photo that was taken by me in London, a very rare visit to the big smoke, back in 2012.

The title leans into a line from the final track of the mix that resonated with me, and still does if truth be told; "behind closed doors my spirit wanes". I remembered the image I had on my hard drive of these two doors, number eleven & eleven and a half, I loved that.... most others would have said 11a and 11b, but to actually write "and a half"...  just perfect! Anyway, that final track, just to give some context to the lyrics, it was released during lockdown in 2020. I think I am right in saying that the artists and musicians did their parts individually and it was all pieced together, given we were all cooped up at home. Another very loose connection I have with this title is that a friend from quite a few years ago now had floated the idea of putting on an event with the same name, it never came to be as far as I'm aware, but I'm reminded of it and that friendship none the less.

The Pale Blue Dot (42)

8 June 2024

Mix '42' from my 'Year of Music' has been renamed to 'The Pale Blue Dot'. Originally I had used the NASA image taken from Voyager 1, and the image that inspired Carl Sagan's book of the same name. I change this up whilst I give things a refresh around here and the image now used is one taken from Cassini, which was a project of NASA, the European Space Agency and the Italian Space Agency which was used to explore Saturn.

Aside from the opening monologue from Carl Sagan (which I timed the mix slightly wrong when I listen back), all of the music used came from compilations that were released by artists and labels as a means to raise funds for the people of Ukraine. This wasn't about supporting any aspect of that war, it was about supporting those impacted by it, people like you and I. So, if you listen to the monologue from Carl Sagan, it should be pretty clear why I opted to use that in the mix and for the title. Aside from that, I tried to use music that had a spaced out vibe to it, otherworldly if you like.

I'm not sure whether the music is still linked into the cause outlined above, but as always I'll link the tracklist up as best as I can and I'd encourage you to pick up any of the music you should like for your own collection.

If you want to know the back story to the 'Year of Music', you'll find that [HERE].

What Are We Doing? (44)

7 June 2024

After a few days off from doing this, it's time to try and get back on with things, and jumping back into it with what was originally titled (overly) simply, '44'.

This one is definitely a selection rather than a mix and it takes in quite a few genres. At the time of this being posted the conflict in Ukraine had literally just started that week, so the music in this selection carries a message. Not just about that conflict, it could be any conflict really. The state of the world, the environment, the nature of political discourse, the mind numbing state of most (not all) content being shared on platforms like Tik Tok and Twitter (Elon can stick the rebranding up his X), the clickbait, the algorithmic manipulation leaning into hate, conflict and rage. I could go on. And on. And on. So, the rebranding of the title and the new cover image should be fairly clear.

If you want to know more about the whole 'Year of Music' thing, you can find out more [HERE].

As usual, I'll link up the tracklist as best I can, a lot of this one will be directly to the releases I own that are on Discogs, though I'm sure you could find a good number of them at retailers like Juno, HMV and the bald, book selling, spaceman's site.

In The Beginning... (52)

23 May 2024

I'm still not all together sure how I should approach this. I suppose I shouldn't overthink it and just get on with it. That's not the easiest as a self-confessed over-thinker. First things first, I'm going to post the media player here and you will find the tracklist at the very foot of this blog post. This blog post is going to be slightly longer than ones that will follow because I feel I need to put a little back story on here to remind visitors, or inform first time visitors of what it was about.

Back in January 2022 I decided I would try and raise some funds for the charity 'Sue Ryder'. My Mum lived in their Deeview Court facility in Aberdeen during her final three years. Deeview Court was the only specialist neurological care facility in Scotland, and one of only a few in the UK. My Mum had lived with Secondary Progressive Multiple Sclerosis for 30 years. It was a bit of a battle securing a place for her there, the demand far outstrips availability and it covers all manner of complex neurological conditions. It wasn't perfect, there were plenty of bumps during her time there, but I firmly believe it was by far the most suitable place to help her manage during the sharpest stages of her illness. In general the staff were very good, some not so much and one or two genuinely exceptional. It's hard work being a carer, it's long hours, it's emotionally draining and it's a role that is extremely undervalued. So, of course you want and aim for everything to be perfect all the time, you also have to be pragmatic and I think that's where (looking back) I think I fitted in during that period, filling the gaps and bringing whatever light I could to make things tolerable for her. Again, not an easy role.

Anyway, Sue Ryder, like most charities, were hit very badly financially when the Covid Pandemic hit. It was also a terrible time to have a loved one residing in place that provided care. A building full of people with very weakened immune systems being cared for by a team of people who were still having to work / travel / live in the same ways we were all being asked to. It would only take one mis-step for everyone in that kind of place to be given the death sentence, and it really would have been given their circumstances. The staff did remarkably well but my Mum still lost her own battle during 2020, acquiring pneumonia and passing away on December 1st.

In January 2022 I decided I would try and raise some funds for Sue Ryder. I had been booked to do a 100 miles sponsored cycle the previous year which was cancelled due to Covid. Because things were still pretty uncertain at the start of 2022, I decided to try and do something I could be more in control of and lean on something I already had a love for. Putting mixes together. I was used to doing a handful of mixes every year, so committing myself to posting one every week did actually feel like a challenge. It wasn't just about putting a mix together, which obviously requires time, effort and a suitable collection of music, there's also the effort to try and drum up interest, create covers, write blogs posts, link up tracklists etc.

Although I did hit my modest target, looking back, I don't think it was a great idea on a personal level. I'd jumped into it, not really expecting much to come from it, but definitely entering it it with a huge amount of hope. Hope that I'd raise some funds, hope that it would get traction and the goal would be exceeded in a big way, that I might also find something to hold onto moving forward, perhaps find a pathway, create new connections and. well, who knows what else. I just hoped for better, I mean we were all supposed to be caring and supportive post-covid,,,, right?. A handful of online friends contributed and offered some occasional encouragement, but during the year, it did more to highlight to me how little support I had around me and it definitely ended up with things feeling pretty negative in a personal sense.

It's water under the bridge now, there's not much I can do to change things. So, why am I reposting them all? Well, during that year I simply named the mixes 52, 51, 50 etc. The thinking behind it was that the mysteriousness and vagueness of the title might encourage more listeners, leading to more donations to the charity. Again, it didn't work the way I'd hoped and although some mixes got lots of plays, most were very low double digits, some even single digit play counts, which was a far cry from what my mixes had received through the years before. During the year I also used the blog to vent away some of my frustrations at life, loss, the state of the world and humanity. I look back and think I probably overshared. I don't regret that aspect; with so little people around me in a support sense, I needed somewhere to share how I was feeling, and that was here. My own little corner of the web. It's fair to say, not many people come around these parts these days, once upon a time it was a busy little blog,  but it hasn't been for a while and that's probably one of the reasons I felt comfortable using it as a place to offload some of my stresses.

Looking back though, and thinking about moving forward, I feel like I'd like it to be less personal, less of a vent, more just a platform for sharing the mixes I've done. Maybe the odd post going over some personal details if it's appropriate to the back story, which I think this slightly lengthy post is. So, I figured I'd take all the old posts down, perhaps give the mixes an individual name rather than just a number, post them to Hearthis where they have never been posted before (and I think I'll lean on more moving forward... it's a financial decision) and perhaps update one or two of the covers that I wasn't so keen on too. We'll see.

If you've managed to get this far, well done. So, about the mix. This mix was the first mix I posted that year, it was originally called 52, but I've renamed it to 'In The Beginning...' for obvious reasons. The aim was for each mix to be at least an hour in length, but this one was slightly shorter because I set out with the initial letters of each artists name spelling out S.U.E  R.Y.D.E.R, if you look at the tracklist below, I'm sure you'll see what I mean.

I'm not sure how frequent I'll be posting these reposts, I doubt there'll be much interest so it doesn't really matter, but I'll keep going until they are all online again.

A final note - I closed my Justgiving page that was set up for this charity fundraiser, but should you wish to donate to the cause Sue Ryder is still a very worthy charity, but I'd be more inclined to support M.S Research or the M.S Society moving forward, and you can do so via the links provided.

For convenience, I'm reposting the player here and the linked up tracklist below, as is always the case.

Dusk Dubs Selection - DD0305

21 February 2024

Dusk Dubs was a podcast series, in a similar vein to the Back To Mine series. My contribution is from back in 2015. There were so many great names contributing to this series, I'm not sure how my name managed to be put in as an option, but it was and I was really happy to be a part of it.

The brief was to provide tracks that meant something to me for some reason or another, to write a little about each track and the guys would segue the tracks together. Or as they put it to me, no mixing, just letting the tracks breathe. As is often the case with these things, I'm not sure everyone followed the brief... I know from my dealings with Box Frequency FM that even the simplest of guides, like time limits to mixes, were often not followed very well.

Sadly, Dusk Dubs is no more, and the website is down too, otherwise I'd have shared some links and the writing I contributed with my tracklist. The tracks each have a meaning to me in one way or another though, and as mentioned, this isn't about mixing (and it wasn't me doing that part in any case). The final aspect was providing an image to use as a cover for my show and I opted to use one from a bike trip I had been on and this is of Glen Coe in the Scottish Highlands.

Reflect - Guest Mix for Corsica One

20 February 2024

This one comes from back in 2021. It had been a good couple of years since I'd been asked to do any guest mixes, and it was always something that gave me a bit of a thrill. Putting mixes together has been a big part of my life, but only in the sense of being a hobby I've loved through the years. At one point I wanted it to be more than that, but opportunity only knocked a couple of times and it was the right opportunities, nor the right times, so a hobby it has remained. Being asked to do a guest mix though, it's nice because it gives me the feeling like someone else has actually enjoyed the selections and stitching together of tracks, and who doesn't like to feel they're doing something they enjoy but getting it right in the sense others do too. That feeling has been few and far between, so when Alessio of Corsica One asked me to put something together for him to host on Mixcloud, of course I was happy to get on the case. As it stands, this was the last guest mix I put together for anyone, so maybe I'm not getting it quite right for others after all... but it's right for me and I'll go with that 🙃

This mix straddles the ambient / electronica sphere, sounds like I've grown to love more as I have explored the genres over time. I'm not altogether content with the cover image but I've opted to leave it as it is. The photo is one I took during my bike trip to Europe in 2019 and is from a few days I spent in Vienna, Austria where I managed to take in a gig with José González.

Farewell

There's a few things to say about the background to this mix from back in 2019. The first thing to say is I've updated the cover. The original cover portrayed a particular aspect of the back story, one which isn't  quite reflecting where things are now that a few years have passed. Also, I'm breaking from the normal blog post layout by putting the player and tracklist ahead of the main blog post. Why? Well, the post is likely going to be quite long, even though next to nobody will read it, it's just a case of me wanting to have some things written down to share thoughts and meanings on things, in my own corner of the internet. So, this post will continue below.

One more point before the music and the further part of the post... if you listen to this mix, please pay attention to the tracks used. These were picked out very purposefully, to convey a message or a story. It could be the titles, or the words within the tracks or indeed the general vibe of the music. This was done to reflect the points I'll try and make later in the post.

As ever, I've opened downloads on Hearthis

Right, so back to the backstory and main blog post.

The main thinking for me behind this mix was about deleting all of my 'Meta' accounts, so Facebook, Instagram and Whatsapp. I really did a thorough job on that, downloading my data, going through the official process of removing personal data stored by them, manually deleting all the content and connections. I hit a hurdle when I realised that you could not delete the app from a Samsung Galaxy phone, merely 'disable' it. Having said that, the 'Farewell' wasn't just a nod towards ditching social media platforms to some extent, it was also about how I felt we were losing certain things that we may have taken for granted.

I've always felt quite uneasy about social media. Let's take the corporate, data scraping and feed manipulation to one side and just focus on the human aspect. Being of an age where I grew up without the internet, but then seeing and experiencing the social, cultural and commercial shifts in society as a result of the growing capacity and functionality of the internet, perhaps gives people of my age bracket (and thereabouts) quite a unique perspective. We're old enough to know life before it, we're perhaps young enough and (generally) tech aware enough to be able to adopt things that have developed over the last 25 years better than the previous generation are generally able to. I think with that perspective in mind, we've seen the toxicity in society, the polarisation and entrenchment of viewpoints, the ability of individuals to hide behind a moniker and express things in ways and to people they never would have been able to previously, and on a scale that is difficult to get your head around. For every positive aspect of the connectivity and function the internet has given, there is without doubt an equal proportion of negative implications that comes hand in hand. So, my general unease about social media stems from that, but is far from limited to that. I think it's also very hard to discern truth, sincerity and quality of connection or interaction because of the impersonal nature of it and I've certainly felt and experienced a massive drop off in genuine real life connections too. That latter part is perhaps a personal thing, I don't know.

With regards to how the social media companies operate, I think we're seeing things play out even more clearly now than when this mix was put together, and we now have another big player on the field in Tik Tok. It was only a few years ago that many people were shouting very loudly about this. Algorithms being manipulated, the addictive nature of receiving dopamine hits for likes, comments and shares, the scraping of data, the monitoring of movements, the fact that if you aren't paying to use a product - then you are the product. Then we have the bullying, the gaslighting, the pile on's to people with differing opinions, the cancel culture, false and misleading information and the bots that amplify those messages, the lack of transparency, the normalising of extreme content, the restriction of growth outwith the social media platforms (people don't leave these sites and visit very many websites outwith the platform). The list really could go on and on and on.

We have a handful of men controlling the largest parts of the online world and they are pretty much free to operate as they wish, they aren't elected, they don't answer to anyone, they have the means to access the highest levels of legal experts, they can hire and fire as they choose, and circumvent rules and laws by exploiting loopholes or passing the buck to someone they view as dispensable.

When I opted to ditch Meta a few years ago, it was clear in my mind that it, and Zuckerberg, were by far the most dangerous and damaging pairing on the scene. The scale, the reach, the lack of transparency and the documented evidence was clear and overwhelming. Although Twitter was viewed as a cesspit, you could still find navigate your way around it, make it useful and ensure your feed was accurate and trustworthy. For me the biggest problem was the anonymous trolls that would often inhabit the replies. However, since Musk took control it has become an incredible mess of misinformation, gaslighting and a manipulated propaganda hell hole. The amplifying of misinformation has gone off the scale with the 'free speech' given as the regular fall back from his bootlickers, when in reality it's pushing agendas that suit him and his own goals. My feed has become pretty useless, the people who I trust and would like to see on my feed are throttled and demoted in prominence because they don't pay for the 'verified' status, which no longer means what it should and simply serves to diminish the clarity and trust of the original intent of the blue tick.

I suppose the tl:dr (too long, didn't read) of all that is that social media has never been more dangerous, more manipulated and more impactful on society than it is now. I intend to step back from it as much as possible, without fully disconnecting myself because despite the overwhelming negativity I feel about it, there are some things that are useful to me.

So,  I think, for the most part moving forward, unless it changes, I'll be a lurking reader of Twitter and no longer posting though I haven't for a few months anyway. On top of that I'm going to delete all content on there. I don't feel happy to have things hosted on there when Musk is pushing the extremes and giving a safe haven to very extreme views and content. Free speech shouldn't mean free from responsibility, especially when the ramifications can be extreme.

I have reopened a Mixamorphosis account on Facebook, very reluctantly, and it still appears that news feeds are as useless as they were a few years ago. Really, I wanted a reliable source for music news on artists and labels I follow, and since Twitter has gone so far downhill, I'd hoped that the alternative would be better. I also think I need a presence to some extent, though I very much doubt it will be much use. At the time of writing, I've had the page open for a couple of months and only gained a couple of connections. I guess I'll just see how it goes, though I won't be having a Facebook presence of my own in a personal sense. Follow or don't follow, I'll just keep doing what I think is right for me and block out the external noise as much as I can. I've thought about trying to utilise Tik Tok, but it's really not likely. There's so much utter mind melting drivel on there, though there are a few good and informative accounts, they're few and far between. You know, maybe I'm just not cut out for it all. I can't help but feel we're too far down the rabbit hole now; the genie has been let out the bottle, it's unlikely to be put back. I've got a Bluesky account, but I'm not sure if that will become as useful as Twitter once was, it's certainly missing a lot of the key accounts that I'd like to see.

I've waffled on long enough. I'll leave you with a couple of points of reference, things that are useful to be aware of -

The Social Dilemma - This is a link to a Netflix documentary. It gives a good overview of what I've tried to go into, far better than I could. It's worth watching, it's definitely worth being aware.

The Great Hack - This is another link to a Netflix documentary. This one is about the Cambridge Analytica scandal and Facebook specifically.

I could go on. In reality, not many people care or pay attention to these things. Similarly with the issues going on around the world, people don't care until it arrives on their doorstep, or the algorithm triggers enough outrage.
