Looking For The Light

30 January 2024

According to what I wrote in the description on Soundcloud, I recorded this mix after doing nothing in a music / blog sense for a six month period. I can't remember exactly what it was that I had going on at the time, I think it was autumn 2017. I remember my Mum being in hospital a lot around that time. I think I had just lost a lot of hope and during the years where she needed increasing levels of care, support was minimal and my own life felt like it had fallen by the wayside. Social media and it's highlight reels compounded things over a long period and the title summed up how I was feeling - I was genuinely looking for something to aim for.

I wrote this down at the time and I think it reflects how I felt about being inundated with the highlight reels of social media versus where I was in my own mind and thinking of how my Mum would have been feeling -

Some breeze through life, basked in a warm glow.

Some float in and out of the shadows,

Whilst others have a seemingly unbroken search for the light.

I was never really happy with the original cover image. It was a photo of me, surrounded by darkness, with just a faint light on me. I had ran it through loads of filters and although it did come out great, I wasn't happy with me being in the image. So, as I'm doing with some of the cover I don't like, I've given it an update and I've been experimenting with Ai, photos, filters and various editing apps. I like this one much better!

The Summer Of Malcontent

This mix from 2017 was recorded before the Summer, but I remember feeling like we were either on the verge, or already in, a state of crisis. Whether speaking climate/environment, the polarisation in politics and the knock on to society, the self harming of Brexit, the unpredicatble nature of Trump. 2016 had been a turbulent year with terror attacks around the world, there was a lot of services breaking apart at the seams, people were struggling to make ends meet, there were strikes happening and protests around the world; so it just felt like things were coming to the boil.  Who'd have thought we'd have ended up looking back from 2024 and thinking things were not so bad!

Another factor in my thinking for the title was that back in the late 1970's there was a period of time in the UK where there the economy was in a mess, there were frequent strikes, power cuts, 3 day working weeks and more besides. This period was known as the Winter of Discontent and I played on that for the title of this mix. The mix wasn't planned at all, sometimes I listen back to a recording and think about what would suit the vibe or the progression of the sounds, the mood I am in, the feeling of the moment in current affairs. That's really how a lot of mixes get their names and covers.

The cover image is just looking through the trees I planted in my back garden (Himalayan Birch trees that have striking and beautiful white trunks all year round), towards the sunset, with a little added graphics from a  design app on my phone.

Chilled Spring - Recolo

29 January 2024

There's no huge back story to this. I really enjoyed doing the seasonal ambient / chillout mixes the year before, it was a new and interesting way of doing things for me and I wanted to go again, so I did. Recolo is Latin for 'recall' or 'revisit'. Just a lovely laid back selection from my shelves, ideal for relaxing and reading a book, or soaking in the bath. As it turned out, and I've no idea how or why, this is my most played mix on Soundcloud and is well into 4 digits at the time of writing.

The picture comes from a walled garden in Tenerife and I added a small design with an app on my phone, it strangely works, well for me.

Back To Mine 1

This "mix" (it's not a mix) was part of the planned contributions to follow on from the seasonal mix series that I was a part of on Balearic Social. That series originated from a fairly off the cuff comment I posted on my Facebook, if you look back through previous posts, you'll find the background to that.

Towards the end of that series, I had suggested a follow up series to emulate the wonderful Back To Mine series that ran through the DMC label from the late 90's to late 00's and featured some excellent acts like Groove Armada, Faithless, Underworld and Carl Cox, to name but a few. That original series was about (as far as I can remember) music that you'd hear if you went "back to theirs", after your night out clubbing etc, but it was also often used as a vehicle to plug their own musical projects. The idea to do a Back To Mine type thing was always in the back of my mind and it seemed like a good time to try take that forward.

The original cast from the seasonal series were mostly involved, but this one started growing arms and legs in a direction that didn't work for me. To my mind, the whole idea was that it was a platform to express a wider flavour of music that you love, perhaps introduce listeners to things they might not otherwise hear, or remember things you'd forgotten about, with a clear emphasis on not being focussed on dj-ing or mixing, or pulling the most expensive records out of your collection, and it felt like as more people got on board, that was the way contributions went, and the original concept was devalued. That's just my opinion of course, people can (and did) do what they want.... but if I wanted to listen to bog standard dj mixes, the latest releases off Juno's chart, I could just go to their mixcloud and pick anything randomly and it wouldn't sound much different to what some were sharing as Back To Mine.

So, for my own part (and I've got more Back To Mine style selections to come), there's no focus on mixing, it's not about trying to be obscure, or showing off vinyl rarities on my shelves. It's just music that I love, from over a long time, different points of life with different meaning and stories behind them. Like the opening track, was a song I used on a DVD I made for my Mum where I compiled lots of photos that meant something to her and backed them up with a combination of music she loved and music I picked. Or, the Darondo track which I first heard through the amazing scene in Breaking Bad where Walter White blew up the loudmouth bankers car in the petrol station, and Walter walks away feeling very proud and bad ass about himself. There's something behind each of them for me, and there's little point in writing it all out here seeing how there's very little interest in what I'm doing here. It's taking a lot of effort just bringing some order to the blog as it is, and that's my main focus for here just now.

So, onto the music. I think that as most of these tracks aren't too difficult to track down if you want them for yourself. Ebay will probably be the cheap option, but I'll link to the Discogs sources from where I have them on my own shelves and if you decide to hunt via ebay it might make it easier.

** Oh, I almost forgot to add a little about the cover image! Behind where I took the photo for the cover (by around a mile) is where I currently live. So, literally I have my back to mine. Now.... music.....

Autumn Chillin'

This was my final contribution to the seasonal series of mixes that started at the tail end of 2015. You'll find Chilled Summer, Chilled Spring and Winter Chill (plus the bonus Winter Chill Peractio) on the links behind each title. You'll find out more about the series via those links, though it's probably self explanatory. I actually quite like the contributions I put in, perhaps not so much the Summer one, but this one and the Winter ones do feel to me that they represent the season quite well in terms of atmospherics, perhaps that's just my own interpretation though. This was aired on Balearic Social radio show on Halloween, 2016 which is why I included the final track.

I'll be posting lots more chillout mixes as I get this blog sorted out. I want it to be my corner of the internet that reflects me, what I've done and what I've enjoyed (or not sometimes), so if you enjoy this, there'll be more to come.

The Chillout Sessions - Guest Mix

This mix was put together for Woodzee who was the host of The Chillout Sessions show on Box Frequency FM and it was my last ever contribution to the station, aired on Christmas Day 2016. 21 mixes I provided, 7 guest mixes and 14 from myself. It closed for good around a year or so later.

I still miss the station, I think I said in a previous post, it wasn't just a music station, there was a real community feel around it with a lot of regular names and faces, not just in terms of shows and hosts but also people tuning in to listen, chatting in the website chatroom and interacting on social media. It was all lost at the flick of the switch. I also felt really disappointed that I didn't get the chance to be involved in any of the final shows during the final run in, but it is what it is. As much as I'd like these things to come back and re-establish that community feel, I think the time has been and gone, which is genuinely a sad thing.

On Vacation 4

This is the most recent installment of the On Vacation mixes that I would post before I headed off on a short break, and this one is from 2016/17 and it hasn't been posted on the blog before. It's a mix of house music with heavy lean into funk, soul and disco and edits that work well in amongst those kind of tracks. As David Kenney from APR once said... Everything's An Edit Anyway, and I think this mix with the samples and cheeky reworkings shows that isn't too far from the truth.

As for the mix itself, I really enjoy this one BUT there is one very frustrating bit during the Blueboy track where the recording glitches momentarily. The recording software on my computer can freeze on occasion, and then clicks back into action a moment or two later. I can only assume that happened here but as annoying as it is, I like the mix and I share it regardless... at least it's not a train wreck mix from me!

The Mix With No Name

28 January 2024

This was just another mix where I hit the record and this came out of it. I think for the most part it's not too bad and there are some really fantastic tunes on here. It's another occasion where I'm listening back to an older mix and finding love for tracks that I've not heard probably since doing this mix. I thin the name came about because I'd watched The Man With No Name, so I adopted it for my own needs.

I kind of struggle to get my head around genres, sub genres, sub sub genres, alt genres.... you get the idea. For me, this is a mix of deep house that moves into shade of tech/techno. Perhaps that wouldn't be everyone's definition, don't @ me.

Chilled Summer

This was my contribution to the continuing series of seasonal chillout mixes that were aired on the Balearic Social radio show. I don't think this is my best selection, not that it's bad, or that I don't like the tracks, I just think it's a bit all over the place and it doesn't really scream summer chill to me. If I could do any of the mixes from that series again, it would be this one for sure. Anyway, here it is, despite how I feel about it. There'll be more that I like even less that I'll be re-posting down the line in my aim to have this space reflecting the things I've done over the years - good, bad or in between; what's amazing to one might be terrible to another, and vice versa, so I figure why not just share them all, regardless of my own thoughts.

Tracklist

01. Wilson Tanner - Sun Room (Growing Bin Records)
02. Mark Barrott - Der Stern, Der Nie Vergeht (International Feel)

Weekend Funk Up

No great back story to this. It was a Friday evening, I had a couple of ciders and had a wee spin of some tunes, no planning, no forethought, just hit record and post the outcome. In my Soundcloud description I wrote that I had been thinking about doing a Deep House mix and that rather than that, this edit heavy mix came out the other side, so I imagine that's where the name 'Weekend Funk Up' came from.

This mix seemed well received by those who listened to it and one thing that I find amusing and confusing in equal measures is when a mix of mine appears in other people's playlists. This one is in a handful on Soundcloud, and when I scroll through the playlists I generally see my mix sitting there with a playcount in the hundreds, in amongst mixes with tens, or even hundreds of thousands of plays, this one is even in someones playlist where another mix has 1.6 million plays, and here's this one with just over 900. How do people find my mixes? How do others get such high play counts? Anyway, it's just something I notice now and then and it really stands out on occasion, like this one.

I already know before I get to the tracklist, it won't be easy to find a lot of these tracks. Many edits have come from folks on Soundcloud who have had them removed, or in some cases entire accounts were removed. I'll do my best, but if you want some of these you will likely need to dig around online yourself.

Chilled Spring

27 January 2024

This was my contribution to the year of seasonal mixes, which started with the Winter Chill series. Where the first series was about ambient and beat free mixes, Chilled Spring was about transitioning from that to something that felt a bit more upbeat, just as moving from Winter to Spring does.

The cover image shows Dunnideer hill and the castle ruins that sit on top, dating from 17th Century, a couple of miles from where I currently 'live'.

A Postcard From Reality

The back story to this mix is that it was a mix to leave on my blog and socials before I headed off on a trip. I've said that during this 'refresh' of the blog I wouldn't go into much detail of a personal nature, but for this I'll let that slide, it's part of documenting my time on this floating space rock, even though nobody is paying any real attention... maybe one day someone might.

This trip wasn't going to be any old trip, after a difficult few years dealing with the care system etc, I was setting off on my own to try and take a ride through Europe on my motorbike for the first time - this has been a dream of mine for many years, a bucket list thing.

I had no plans or route, the only thing that I had in mind was that I was stopping at Outlaws Yacht Club in Leeds, to take in the Balearic Social 5th Birthday bash, and hopefully meet some people in person that I'd become friends with online through music, people like Andy Pye, Kirsty P and Andy Hickford among others. This was no small feat for me.... any of it. No confidence, no social life, no real world friends, never having done adventure like this. What was I thinking? So, I made the mix, posted it through the usual places and of course here, where I plugged the life out of the event, the venue and the folks that were due to play there.

Well, let me just cut a long story fairly short. It pi$$ed with rain (biblically) and was blowing a gale most of the way from Aberdeenshire until reaching the motorway of the M1, at one point when coming over the Borders it hailed so bad I could make a snowball from the amount that collected between the petrol tank and my crotch! Bad weather on a bike, not ideal, but it's part of the package and experience. What was a big deal was being bashed on the motorway by an inexperienced lorry driver! I managed to save it from being a full on fall, but my brand new £600 panniers were scratched to bits and ruined. I did continue to Leeds, I only spent one night there rather than the two I intended. I met Kirsty and Andy Pye, and one or two others who were probably too drunk to remember much of anything. Kirsty played a great set and we spent a good time chatting, but with me not being a social butterfly, I felt very awkward and out of place, you know that feeling when you feel like you're awkwardly hovering, well that was me for the most part. I caved in to feeling uncomfortable and called it a night at midnight whilst the party continued and I talked myself out of continuing my journey the following day and headed home. Go me!! So, with the way things went, and how luck seems to be for me at times 'A Postcard From Reality' feels like a very apt title. I think the worst thing is, since that night, I don't think any of the people I had been friends and done a lot with online and met / made the effort to visit have spoken to me since; I guess you either fit in, or you don't. It did knock me though and I probably really disengaged from trying to make friends etc online from that point. I look back and think that at least I did try, even though it was very much out my comfort zone. Lessons learned in some respects I guess.

Just to add some positivity into this post. I have managed to get that trip through Europe done on my bike, three times now, and very lucky I feel too, though none were without hitches or hiccups, I guess that's part of the appeal. If I could do it for a living the life would be perfect! The other thing is, my brain wouldn't allow me to sit on my arse at a beach for two weeks, it just won't switch off and I have to be doing something.

Anyway, this was an off the cuff mix, that'll become evident toward the end when one or two tracks are very out of place. That said, I ended with the track Better Man intentionally because pushing myself to do this whole thing was with an intention of coming home in a better mindset, feeling like a better man.... hah!

Vide Cor Meum

This mix wasn't initially meant to be a guest mix for anyone, it was just a mix that I did for fun, but I shared it and was asked by Simon Cox at Saturo Sounds if they could use it for one of their shows, which I was happy for them to do.

One of the things I'm enjoying about this process of updating the blog with older mixes is that I'm listening to them as I go and rediscovering some of the tunes I've used through the years. I've got a huge library of music, in both physical and digital format, so it's really easy to lose track of things and forget what's there through the course of time. There's some great house tracks on here, and that is something else I'm finding, a fresh enjoyment for some genres I've listened to less in the last few years. Not that I lost my love of house, but it's nice to reacquaint myself.

The title came from a post I saw on social media of someone that had lots of cool and interesting tattoos, 'Vide Cor Meum' was one of them and it was done in a really nice, ornate font, which caught my eye. When I looked it up I learned that it meant 'See My Heart'. It stuck in my mind and pairing it with music and a photo of my turntable seemed like a good match.

Winter Chill - Peractio

For a more complete back story to this mix, you can find out via Winter Chill 1. I put this particular mix together as a back up mix, just in case any of the contributors to the Winter Chill series didn't pull through and there would be a gap in the programming for the radio show that was hosting them. As it turned out, everyone showed when they needed to and this mix went unused. Unfortunate really because I really enjoy it. The idea wasn't to be a strictly ambient mix, it was that it needed to be 'beat free', so I tried to be a little wider ranging with the genres used. Even though this wasn't used on the radio, and although it doesn't matter hugely, it was nice that this mix got the Number 1 in the weekly chart on Hearthis.

Just as an FYI... The word 'Peractio' is latin and it means 'completion' or 'the last act'. That seemed fitting given there had been 10 Winter Chill mixes throughout the course of the Winter months. The image is a photo taken by me on near Braemar, on Royal Deeside on my way to Edinburgh. It was snowy, cold and atmospheric, so it also was a good fit for the project.
