The month of August was all about House music, the month of September is all about the edit. The edit scene was very vibrant, active and quite probably over saturated 10 years ago. It had a bit of a community feel for a while but as the popularity grew so did the egos of some of those people in it. I won't be naming any names but I came across it often, probably aided by the explosion of Facebook, the rise of Soundcloud and the seemingly endless stream of online radio stations. Blogs, including yours truly also played their part. Ultimately the talent lay with the original artist and the music was rarely improved with an edit but what it did do was make some classics much more DJ friendly.
Although there is still an active core group putting edits out and nights on or airing radio shows it definitely isn't what it used to be and for me that's a good thing. Every man and his dog with a copy of Fruityloops or a bootleg of Ableton were throwing edits out, often coining it in with little merit in that and way too often without credit to the original artist. I could rant about much more, I could praise in equal measure, but the bottom line is that I'm still a bit of a sucker for an edit. So why not put a few mixes out?
As ever, I would encourage you first and foremost to purchase some music of the original artists if at all possible. I imagine the tracklists will be a bit patchy this month in terms of links for the actual edits I use but if you dig around the internet hard enough you may find some still floating around.
Of course, these weekly mixes I'm posting are in an effort to raise some funds for the wonderful work done by the charity organisation Sue Ryder. It's much needed after being heavily impacted by the pandemic and now the rising costs impacting every corner of life. Any donation, no matter the size, is needed and appreciated. Donation can be made via Just Giving [HERE].
After a couple of donations a couple of months ago things have very much dried up, not just in terms of donations but also in terms of traffic here and plays via Soundcloud or Mixcloud. In all honesty I've been finding things increasingly difficult this year so I've definitely gone off the boil in terms of my own effort in promoting and engagement as a result. I've tried, without much success, to lift my game but I suppose it's all out there to see how I've been doing in that regard. So, having said that, should there be anybody reading this, any wee help or support to drive things forward would be much appreciated - a share or a plug on social media might just get the ball rolling again.
