The fifth, and is it stands, final mix for the year, was a much more light hearted affair than the chillout mixes I'd done earlier. This one was just me letting myself unwind with a few ciders and some tunes from a few (but far from all) of my favourite editors. The reason behind the title is again, just how I've been feeling. I could do with shaking things up, getting away and the image is one I pinched from Tumblr, not sure the original source or I'd credit it, but it just tied in with the story of the year.

If you do know the original source for the graphic, let me know and I'll happily link and credit it. I'll post up the tracklist, but I won't be linking this time, you can do your own leg work. A lot of it will have come via Soundcloud or the likes, a lot probably won't even be there now, but dig around if there are bits that take your fancy. Apologies if any of the tracks are labelled slightly wrong, my hands have been a bit rubbish so my writing isn't great (I write the tracklist as I mix), so with the added ciders, even I'm struggling to read my own writing :)

Looking For The Light (October 2017)

I hadn't done a mix for months and a lot of those months which were very challenging, I feel, came out in this mix. My Mum, who has to live with the horrendous impact of Multiple Sclerosis at a very advanced stage of the illness, had spent 6 months in hospital. I hadn't been feeling well this year or two in particular, and it was a constant battle (and still is) trying to deal with the care / hospital / nursing care issues that have enveloped our lives for quite a few years now. Trying to keep a steady stream of visits to her at a 60 mile round trip each day, keep her spirits up (and my own really), deal with the aforementioned issues amongst others; safe to say, it's been on top of me. Sadly, not many people listen. Whether it's reaching out for help from professionals, or friendship, or a little bit of light to help guide you along the difficult paths life throw up. When things get tough, you're on your own. I tend not to let too much go on a personal level online because folk can be cruel, even in light of someone else's struggles, but I'm telling the story behind the mix, to say anything else would not give the picture, and even then, the picture given is condensed and restricted. The reality is, not many people are likely to read this, I imagine a handful at most, so in that regard, I don't mind sharing some detail.

My Mum did get a place at the only Neurological care centre in Scotland (Sue Ryder in Aberdeen), but it was a huge effort to make that happen, having been on the waiting list and classed 'at risk' for a good 2-3 years. Hopefully things will improve for her, on the care side, but the battles go on. Sue Ryder are always needing donations of money or items to sell through their shops. They don't get as much limelight as other charities, so do help them with a donation if you are able and so inclined. They are very appreciative of any support.

The picture is just an old profile picture of myself, with some filters used from some great apps I like to play around with.

The Summer Of Malcontent

This one came just a month after the Chilled Spring: Recolo mix that I posted, and despite my feeling that it was a bit better than the previous mix, it's had just 10% of the number of plays that the previous one had. Go Figure.

Anyway, the title came from the fact that things just feel extremely unbalanced and difficult throughout the world at the moment, not just on a personal level. We've got Trump, the Tories, Putin, North Korea, terrorism in the news every other day, hardships being experienced by huge swathes of the population, the environment is becoming more unsettled with each passing year, greed and corruption throughout the world, inequality rife. It just seems like we're in this endless spiral of self destruction and it weighs heavy on my mind. The Summer Of Malcontent was a bit of a play on the Winter of Discontent which hit the UK in the 70's, among a seemingly similar downward spiral. Will we ever learn? I doubt it, but one can live in hope. That's all the little guy can do really.

There isn't any great story behind the picture. It's just a photograph I took of the trees I planted in my garden a few years ago, and I love playing around with various photo apps for my covers, so that's the simplicity of it.

Chilled Spring: Recolo

The 2nd mix I put together in 2017 kind of catches the feeling I've been in during this year to eighteen months. The ambient and chilled vibe is just soothing to me and it takes no effort to slip into. Perhaps it's because there's been a lot of noise and distraction in life away from music. Perhaps it's just another step in the development of musical tastes. Something which is and should be constantly evolving. In reality, it's a bit of both. Not to say I don't still love the funk, the disco, house, deep stuff etc, I still love and listen to it all, but for playing, this has been the main flavour of late.

I had wanted to put together a chilled winter mix at the start of the year but being poorly put paid to that. I had wanted to do it as a personal closing to the seasonal mixes that I'd started and helped collate the previous year. When Spring came around I just had to get on and do something anyway, I'd picked up some lovely music, and I wanted to share.

For anyone that's interested, the photo is from a lovely hidden gem of a spot in Tenerife. If I told you where, it would be less hidden. Go and have a walk along the coast near Adeje ;)

Back To Mine (March 2017)

The first of five posts with 'mixes' that I have done this year but just never got round to posting. This one isn't really a mix, but it's first up and is the only 'guest' thing I've done this year, possibly the year before too, I forget if truth be told.

Anyway, long story short, Back To Mine was intended on being the follow up series to the seasonal selections that were put together last year and a homage to the series that we knew and loved from years ago. If I'm honest, I wish it had remained the original group from the seasonal mixes. Not to take anything away from the other people that have contributed because I've enjoyed a good few of them and some of the folk involved really put their heart into it, but it really has grown arms and legs, and apart from the fact I liked the compact group we had, I feel like some folk missed the approach that was originally intended. Anyway, it's someone else's baby. I'm not sure if anything is planned for next year, but if you follow the people in the know you surely won't miss out.

I'm going to post this from Soundcloud, but the players that are used in following posts will be from Hearthis. See the previous post for my all round grumble fest if you want to know why.

Back to the post. This selection, as all of the selections were originally supposed to be, was a 2 hour selection of music played in full that you might hear if you ever came 'Back To Mine' after a night out (no laughing now), with some accompanying words on what the track choice means to the selector. Music that moves, chills, draws a smile and brings you back to remember times you link to the music. This one was broadcast in March and is available on the Balearic Social Soundcloud. If you care to read the blurb I put alongside my selection, dig around on Faecesbook and you'll find it.

For the record, the picture used is what you would see if you were coming 'Back To Mine'. It's known locally as the Harestone Road (after nearby farmland I think) and is around 200 yards from my house. I also have an alternative version with a totally different set of tracks that I may post up in time, we'll see.
